A little and a lot

The Pensacola Police Department has a birthday coming up next month. On July 19, 2025, the department will celebrate 204 years of serving the citizens of Pensacola!

How much has changed? A lot and a little. A 1908 report illustrates this:

In 1908, we had a marshal and deputy marshal; in 2025, we have a chief and deputy chief.

Today, we have about 60-70 patrol officers. In 1908, we had 20.

Today, vehicle damage averages about $10,000 each. In 1908, repairs to the covered patrol wagon was $300.

In 1908, we paid two stock catchers $50 every month to round up the loose cows, pigs, and horses. Today…well…

The average cost of one Glock 40 caliber semi-automatic pistol is $500 today. In 1908, we purchased fourteen .38 revolvers for $424.

In 1908, we paid a physician $50, $50 for medicine, $50 for transportation paupers, and $75 for hospital expenses every month. Today, they go to the Emergency Room!
